Explanations of Giving Methods

Gifts are contributions received by The Friends of Chabot College for furtherance in its mission, and for which The Friends of Chabot College or Chabot College has made no commitment of resources or services other than possibly committing to use the gift as the donor specifies.

Unrestricted gifts are given without designation of use and allow The Friends of Chabot College to identify areas of need within the college for its highest and best application.

Restricted gifts are designated for a specific purpose. For example, contributions intended to honor an individual (living or deceased) or to fund a specific type of scholarship or campus activity are forms of restricted giving.

Endowment funds are gifts that are specified by donors to be retained and invested for income producing purposes. Income derived from endowment may be unrestricted or restricted.

Legacy gifts or planned gifts may be in the form of cash, securities/stocks, real estate, artwork, partnership interests, personal property, life insurance, retirement income, which the donor intends to be allocated during one’s lifetime or at death, and is part of the donor’s overall financial and/or estate planning.

Pledge gifts are promises to make a contribution at some time in the future. A signed agreement that binds the total amount and the frequency of payment must be drawn up between the donor and The Friends of Chabot College.

Sponsorships are contributions made in order to support activities, events, or projects for which recognition is offered in return. Businesses and corporations often make such gifts.

Support may be in the form of cash, pledges, life insurance, wills, or transfer of investments and real property. Other giving arrangements include bequests, trust funds, and endowments. These latter types of gifts are invested for long-term growth and ongoing income to help Chabot College students reach their educational goals.

All gifts are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law, and subject to current tax accounting limitations. In accordance with Internal Revenue Service regulations, if a donor receives benefits in return for a gift, the amount of the gift recorded and reported is reduced by the fair market value of all benefits given. Donors are encouraged to consult a qualified tax consultant for more detailed information.

Mr. Woody Phillips

Mr. Woody Phillips

Mr. Woody Phillips is a 2007 alumnus of the Welding Technology program at Chabot College. He wanted to say thanks for his excellent education, and decided that a scholarship was the best way to show his appreciation. His employer, Google, matched his contribution dollar for dollar, and we are able to offer two scholarships to students majoring in Machine Tool Technology. Mr. Phillips is pictured here with the first recipient of that scholarship Luis Perez Gonzalez.

Sylvia and Juan Espinoza Memorial Scholarship

Sylvia and Juan Espinoza Memorial Scholarship

Davida Scott is a case manager for youth in Hayward, California. Before her best friend Sylvia Espinoza passed away at 25 years old due to cancer, they spent a lot of time together discussing how Sylvia’s legacy and caring for others might live on. Together they decided to establish a scholarship at Brenkwitz Alternative High School & Hayward Community Day because it would be one of the first scholarships founded for seniors attending both high schools. Shortly after Sylvia died, her brother Juan passed away unexpectedly from pneumonia at the age of 29 . He left behind his family, his beautiful daughter and friends. Davida wanted to make sure that Sylvia & Juan would be remembered for generations to come. Davida has funded and named a scholarship in their memory. It is intended for students who have graduated from either Brenkwitz Alternative High School or the Community Day School, and are now enrolled at Chabot College. The purpose of the scholarship is to pay for the students' books and school supplies. The photo shown here is of Sylvia and Juan Espinoza.
